Egypt Launches Two-Day Senate Election
Voting began at 9 a.m. local time (07:00 GMT) in more than 8,000 polling locations spread across the country, as reported by a state-run news agency.
The process, which continues until Tuesday evening, is being supervised by judicial bodies to ensure transparency.
There are 424 hopefuls competing for 100 seats under the individual candidacy system. Among them are 183 independents and 241 candidates representing political parties.
An additional 100 seats are being filled through a nationwide list called the “National List for Egypt,” which spans the country’s four electoral districts.
According to the National Election Authority, more than 9,000 officials from the State Lawsuits Authority and the Administrative Prosecution Authority—both judicial entities—are presiding over 8,825 subcommittees within 8,286 voting centers. They are supported by approximately 65,000 administrative staff.
The electoral process is being observed by nine international organizations, 59 domestic civil society associations, and delegations from 20 foreign diplomatic missions.
Around 25,000 licensed journalists from local, regional, and global news agencies are also covering the event.
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly voted in the Cairo and Giza governorates, respectively.
Following his vote, Madbouly called on the public to engage “actively and responsibly in this national duty.”
Egyptians living abroad cast their votes on Friday and Saturday in 136 polling stations situated in 117 different countries.
