Madagascar’s President Seeks Safety After Assassination Attempt
The embattled leader emphasized that the country’s political crisis, marked by ongoing anti-government demonstrations, could only be resolved through the constitution.
In a live broadcast on Facebook, Rajoelina stated, "I was forced to find a safe place to protect my life today," and stressed his continued efforts to find solutions: "I never stop looking for solutions.”
At 51 years old, the president has faced increasing pressure from opposition movements demanding his resignation.
Rajoelina had been expected to deliver a widely anticipated national speech. However, it was ultimately cancelled after significant delays, reportedly due to a faction within the military attempting to seize control of state-operated media.
Reiterating his stance, Rajoelina said, "Only the constitution can resolve the crisis." Prior to this, reports suggested he had been flown to France on a military aircraft on Sunday following "a deal" with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Nonetheless, Emmanuel Macron on Monday refrained from verifying whether France had indeed evacuated Rajoelina, merely stating during a press engagement in Egypt, "I just wish to express our great concern.”
Since September 25, Rajoelina has been the target of demonstrations predominantly led by young people.
The protests, initially sparked by dire shortages of water and electricity and accusations of corruption, quickly escalated into broader demands for the president to step down.
The mounting dissent has triggered a series of political shake-ups, including the disbandment of the Cabinet and the installation of a new prime minister along with fresh appointments in key security roles.
