Egypt Says Suez Canal Maintains Safe, Normal Maritime Operations
The Suez Canal Authority said its chairman, Osama Rabie, made the remarks during a World Maritime Day 2026 event held in Alexandria and organized by the Maritime Transport Sector of the Ministry of Transport.
Rabie said navigation through the canal was proceeding steadily, while revenues recorded a significant annual increase. Income reached $567.1 million in August, compared with $326 million during the same month of 2025, representing a 56.7% rise.
He emphasized that shipping activity remained stable and that vessels were receiving services efficiently. He also highlighted the role of canal pilots, specialized local navigators who board ships and guide them safely through the canal’s narrow passage, saying they were carrying out their responsibilities with a high level of preparedness and professionalism.
Navigation data showed that 1,358 vessels passed through the canal in August, transporting 68.3 million metric tons of net cargo. During the same month a year earlier, 1,070 vessels carrying 45.2 million metric tons of net cargo used the waterway.
According to Rabie, the figures reflected a 27% increase in vessel traffic, a 51.1% rise in net cargo volumes and a 56.7% increase in canal revenues.
Addressing the impact of geopolitical developments and international crises in recent years, Rabie said disruptions had placed pressure on global supply chains. At the same time, he stressed that the Suez Canal had again shown its essential role in maintaining the movement of goods through international trade routes.
